1. Eat low Glycaemic Index food: Wholefoods (complex carbohydrates eg brown bread, wholewheat pasta) compared to processed foods (simple carbohydrates eg white bread, white pasta) take longer to breakdown in the body and so you feel full for longer. It isn&#8217;t so much a diet as a sensible lifestyle choice: you can eat low GI foods for life.<br />
2. When you&#8217;re hungry, drink a glass of water and see if you&#8217;re still feeling hungry after 30 minutes: in the Western World, we find it harder to determine the difference between thirst and hunger.<br />
3. Do some light weight exercises to tone the body: muscle &#8220;burns&#8221; fat (ie it increases the metabolic rate).<br />
4. Cardiovascular exercise is important: try intense exercise for 30 minutes, 3 times a week, to an intensity that makes you sweat and makes it hard to talk normally.<br />
5. Drinking coffee (caffeine) before exercising tells the body to burn fat rather than the glycogen and glucose in the blood. This is basically exactly what those expensive diet pills do.<br />
6. A sensible weight loss rate is around 1-2lbs a week. Try losing just 1lb a week. Long-term targets are more healthy and easier too &#8212; just cut out 1 item a day! So if your target is to lose 20lbs, then it should take 20 weeks, and if you lose 2lbs in one week, then you can relax a bit the following week with a treat. If you don&#8217;t lose any weight in one week, then it isn&#8217;t a problem. Draw a graph so that you&#8217;re pretty much on course for the duration, and don&#8217;t just focus on the individual week or day.<br />
7. Eat slowly and chew each mouthful: savour the taste. Put down your knife and fork or sandwich in between each bite and only pick them up again once you&#8217;ve swallowed the food. You&#8217;ll take longer to eat and the body will register you&#8217;re full before you&#8217;ve over-eaten.<br />
8. Focus on the goal/outcome of your diet such as a new slim you in a swim suit or people complimenting you on your figure at work.<br />
9. Fight cravings easily: use Emotional Freedom Techniques to dissipate the cravings so that you can stick to your plan.<br />
10. Work out why you snack on food. Are you bored? Frustrated with something? Looking for satisfaction elsewhere in your life? Does your food only provide you with temporary happiness? Perhaps it is time to speak to an Emotional Freedom Techniques therapist to help you achieve long-term, permanent weight loss.</p>
