The AIB’s to celebrate creativity and reward broadcasters for their success and factual programming. The AIB international media excellence awards are now in their seventh year in 2011 is looking to be the most exciting yet.

This year for the first time ever the AIB’s feature categories for best science coverage, a new category for best financial coverage and the much requested and demanded category for best live sports coverage.

For many broadcasters this is their only chance to gauge their popularity amongst their peers and chance to be recognized for their tremendous accomplishments in international broadcasting.

In 2010 the AIB excellence awards were announced and presented at an amazing ceremony at the LSO St. Luke’s in London on November 9, 2010. These awards were attended by hundreds of international broadcasting executives and talent from the international broadcasting and media industries of the world.

For 2011 the categories are more robust than ever before. The 2011 people’s choice category is for programmers covering democracy uprisings that had it tremendous impact on the tumble to us changes that have happened and are still happening particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. International media has played an amazing key role and spreading the word and helping ordinary citizens take control of their governments and their futures. This year more than ever international media has had an amazing impact on shaping our world today tomorrow and long-term into the future.

If you would like to submit your entry for the 2011 AIB awards your deadline to do so is Friday, July 1, 2011. Your submission will be reviewed by an independent panel of highly respected media executives and professionals from all over the world. All entries will then be narrowed into a short list in each category and then the final decisions will take place before the awards are given out on November 9, 2011.

– the AIBs – were created in 2005 by the Association for International Broadcasting.

The AIBs recognise excellence in the international broadcasting industry and attract entries from broadcasters all over the world. In 2008, well over 300 entries were received, competing for 12 Awards.

The 2010 AIBs were presented in London at LSO St Luke’s on Tuesday 9 November, including the new People’s Choice award which rewarded the best coverage of climate change by a TV network

Back when Windows Vista was all the rage, it debuted a feature called Flip 3D. It’s a neat window switcher that displays the currently open windows as a 3-dimensional stack of windows that you sort through, one by one. Well, it’s still with us on Windows 7: Try it now by hitting Win+Tab.

Version 2.0 of bare-bones text editor WriteMonkey has just been released. This release comes after a lengthy testing period (some of it covered on Download Squad), and adds several news features:

• Text comments: When working on a manuscript, sometimes you may want to add comments and thoughts that should not be included as part of the final text. Now you can preface a paragraph with // (two slashes), and WriteMonkey will regard it as a comment. It would not be included in the word count, you could select not to export it, and its text would be slightly dimmed, using the new syntax coloring engine.
• Typewriter mode: This mode carries WriteMonkey’s typewriter metaphor to the extreme. It keeps the text insertion point in the middle of the line, and moves the text around it. So you type and the lines move back and forth. It’s actually lots of fun, and can be toggled by hitting Ctrl+Shift+Alt+L.
• More statistics: WriteMonkey’s had text statistics for a while now (accessible using F12). These have been made more comprehensive, and they now show average words per sentence, estimated reading time, amount of “hard words” (words with more than 3 syllables), and more. There’s also a list of word frequencies so you can avoid repetition. This feature has been around since version 2.0 preview 1, but if you haven’t upgraded from 0.9 (the previous “Stable” version), it’s a great addition.

Late in 2010, Mozilla delivered the first alpha of Conversations for its Thunderbird email client. The add-on brings Gmail-like threading to your Thunderbird inbox, and it worked quite nicely in our testing. As is the case with an alpha release, however, there were loads of bugs to squash and features to to tweak — which Mozilla has been doing ever since.

There’s now a second alpha of Conversations available to download and it brings a number of updates to the handy quick reply feature. Mozilla also says that “If you’ve been reluctant to use Thunderbird Conversations because some bug would annoy you, there’s good chances it’s been fixed.”

Conversations alpha 2 also adds a “send and archive” option, and we’re glad to see that — it’s one of our favorite Gmail Labs features, after all.

We’ve seen hackers use keyboards to deliver malicious code to computers, and we’ve seen smartphones used as remote controls for cars and TV — but we’ve never seen a smartphone disguised as a keyboard used to control a computer, until now. A couple folks at this year’s Black Hat DC conference have devised a clever bit of code that allows a rooted smartphone — connected to a PC through USB — to pose as a keyboard or mouse in order to attack and control the computer. The hack takes advantage of USB’s inability to authenticate connected devices coupled with operating systems’ inability to filter USB packets, which would enable users to thwart such an attack. While utilizing a digital costume to hack a computer is a nifty idea, it doesn’t pose much additional risk to users because the method still requires physical access to a USB port to work — and most of us would probably notice someone plugging a smartphone into our laptop while we’re using it.

LSOs are very commonly used throughout the Web, but unlike conventional cookies they’re a little harder to delete. A lot of websites use them to track you across the Web, but they’re also used by sites like YouTube to store your video preferences.

The thing is, you’ve always been able to delete these LSOs, it’s just a bit of a pain in the ass. You have to visit the Flash Global Storage Settings Panel — and honestly, how many of you knew that? The difficulty of deleting LSOs led to the creation of evercookie, which is likely the main reason behind this new effort from Adobe.

As for when the new API will be rolled out, Chrome Dev will be the first, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. There’s no word of when it will be implemented in Firefox, but presumably it will be after the launch of Firefox 4. Opera and Internet Explorer — who knows!
